Phlebotomy Training in San Diego

The sight of blood makes some people squirm and faint. Yet, for others, it’s just a fact of life. A Phlebotomist or Phlebotomy Technician is specially trained to draw blood from patients for analysis. Thanks to your valiant effort, lab technicians can analyze the blood for measures of sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, nitrogen, magnesium, creatinine, glucose, calcium and cholesterol. Some blood tests can even determine the presence of STDs, the state of pulmonary function, and measure T-cells or white blood cells that may indicate infection or illness. This important job can be obtained after a brief training session. There are many job prospects in San Diego, according to, which currently lists 44 positions available.

Educational Training

You can get your Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in any type of medical science. This path costs more and takes longer to complete, but you’ll become a true expert in your field, learn about other types of sciences, you’ll have better job prospects, and you’ll capture a higher wage following graduation. Your studies will involve a combination of classroom and internship experiences. Whether you go for a degree or not, you will need certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathologists.

Skills You Will Need

You’ll need to be steady with your hands, the ability to problem solve and grace under pressure. Employers will look for certification, education and a positive attitude that fits in with their culture. It’s good if you consider yourself a “people person” with a calm demeanor and pleasant voice, as patients may be nervous about getting their blood taken. You will need basic computer skills, in addition to knowledge of proper sanitization and lab procedures.

Phlebotomy Job Expectations

The job of a Phlebotomy Technician is not necessarily glamorous. You’ll spend a lot of time on your feet, work around fluorescent lighting and lots of loud machines beeping. You won’t be guaranteed time off on the weekends, holidays or evenings. However, you will be in a safe environment and many people working in the field say the compensation makes long hours worth it.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that the average Phlebotomist makes $12 – $13 per hour. However, San Diego has one of the best salaries for a Phlebotomist Technician, who can make $14 to $16 an hour. The job prospects for California Phlebotomists are anticipated to continue growing along with the aging population, added health care beneficiaries and increasing demand for skilled medical staff.
