Phlebotomy Training Programs in Kentucky

Phlebotomists belong to the group of clinical laboratory technicians or medical assistants. They are responsible for drawing blood from a patient’s vein for conducting diagnostic tests or for blood banking. Phlebotomy training programs are offered by community colleges, vocational schools and private clinics.

Certification Is Preferred By Most Employers

The duration of time it will take depends on the level of training you have chosen – from certificate programs to diploma to associate degrees, you can choose the course that best suits you. Having national-level Certification is non-mandatory in Kentucky, but most employers prefer hiring certified phlebotomists.

Prerequisite Training

To enroll for a training program, you will need a high school diploma or GED. Phlebotomists are a part of the clinical laboratory team, which is why they must have complete knowledge about specimen collection, processing, data recording, safety measures and other such tasks. You will learn about advanced phlebotomy techniques, blood-serum collection by capillary or venipuncture, labeling, emergency procedures etc. A minimum of 120-hours of clinical experience and an externship are also a part of most phlebotomy training programs.

The Right Personal Skills Needed

Good phlebotomists need to be skilled at drawing and collecting blood, and must have an eye for detail. You must be able to maintain accurate records of patients, perform basic computing and clerical tasks and assist your patients in every way possible. You must be careful while performing venipuncture or skin punctures – wear gloves, dispose-off medical waste properly and maintain complete hygiene. At times, you might need to reassure anxious patients. You will need to be calm, gentle and empathetic to put your patient at ease.

Job Expectations

Phlebotomist jobs are on a rise especially in Kentucky. It is a great place for laboratory technicians and phlebotomists since the average salary for phlebotomists in Kentucky is higher than other states, and the cost of living is lower.

The average annual salary for phlebotomists is $36,000 (20% higher than national average), and the hourly wage ranges from $15.5 to $19. Phlebotomists in Kentucky do not require any sort of formal education beyond high school, as most employers offer training on the job. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts rapid job growth and excellent job opportunities for phlebotomy technicians.
