Phlebotomy Training in Virginia

Are you currently looking to get started with phlebotomy training in Virginia?

Many  students decide to signup for an allied medical training course after high school in order to jump start their career and gain real on-the-job medical experience.

So what actually does a Phlebotomist do?

Phlebotomy is the act of drawing blood out from the veins of a patient. It’s an ancient process that was originally known as “bloodletting“.

The blood is used in pathological laboratories to find out specific health conditions in a patient, or sometimes, the phlebotomist draws blood for other purposes such as blood donation.

A phlebotomist usually works with a hospital, clinic, or a blood bank. Many schools within the state of Virginia offer training and phlebotomy certification preparation, and it pays to be nationally certified.

Many certified phlebotomists  also obtain additional certifications or degrees from accredited colleges after gaining a few years of experience in the field.

Required Phlebotomy Training

An aspiring phlebotomist has plenty of options for training and exam preparation. There are programs offered at private satellite clinics, colleges and vocational schools throughout Virginia.

While the clinics pay a great deal of importance to practical exposure, the schools combine theory with practical sessions.

The courses are usually divided into credits and cover both the basics and advanced aspects of phlebotomy.

Various qualifications available include:

  • Phlebotomy Certificate
  • Associate Degree
  • Bachelor Degree

Almost all courses require the applicant to possess some minimum educational qualifications. Depending on the college, a successful candidate can also take the certification examination conducted by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

Integrated Skills You Will Need

A phlebotomist must know the primary skills very well such as:

  • Venipuncture techniques
  • Identifying puncture sites
  • Collecting samples in the right tubes (inverting the tubes)
  • Bandaging the punctured sites after the blood draw
  • Sample preservation

A phlebotomist is also expected to have knowledge about human anatomy and physiology, different types of veins, laboratory best practices, computer operations, data security, tools used for venipuncture and evaluation, basic handling of specimen, waste disposal, tourniquet application, and removal and glucometer systems.

A phlebotomist must also be good at patient management.

Each patient may react differently, and the phlebotomist must be able to manage the situations in a calm and composed manner.

Job Expectations & Growth Opportunities

The job prospects for a phlebotomist are healthy, as the Bureau of Labor Statistics has predicted a growth of 14% in the number of jobs, at least till 2018.

The average salary of a phlebotomist in Virginia is $30,000 annually, though the salary varies in different cities like Lexington, Waynesboro, and Winchester.

The positive forecast is based on the increasing demand for phlebotomists in various hospitals and clinics. A phlebotomist is also entitled to other benefits, depending on the compensation policy of the employer such as paid time off, health benefits and overtime opportunities.
