Phlebotomy Certification in California

If you wish to pursue a career in California as a licensed phlebotomist, you must acquire your phlebotomy certification. It is usually recommended for people who are looking to get started in the medical field to pursue this career since drawing blood for lab work will basically be you main daily task while learning to deal with patients and other medical personal.

The states of California and Louisiana are the only states that require anyone who isn’t a professional nurse, doctor or medical lab scientists to go through training for their phlebotomist certification. A California phlebotomist has many duties they will perform each day, so the training-whether it is for a position in the Bay Area or any other part of California will be a necessary certification to earn.

A phlebotomist is responsible for properly taking samples of blood from a patient, carefully handling their blood once it leave their body, labeling and cataloguing the samples, making certain every implement and surgical device is sterile, taking accurate notes on the sample’s direction and travel to ensure quality control and prevent contamination.

Bay Area Medical Academy

Although most California phlebotomist’s daily work of taking patient samples is scheduled and not actually during emergency situations, it can still be stressful just like any other job in the medical field. Being prepared and well trained by an accredited training program or school if you plan on working in California should be your priority.

For example, The Bay Area Medical Academy offers classes for phlebotomy certification that are recommended and mandated by the California Department of Public Health.

There are several different courses depending on your experience and desired career goals. The phlebotomy courses available are for:

  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT1)
  • Limited Phlebotomy Technician (LPT)
  • CPT1 for Experienced Phlebotomists

California Bay Area participants/students must complete the lessons in 2 ways:

  • Classroom Work
  • Field Training

To become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I, you will need to meet the following California requirements:

  • High school diploma (or GED/Equivalent)
  • Minimum of 40 hours approved classroom instruction
  • Minimum of 40 hours of real training
  • Minimum of 10 successful skin punctures
  • Minimum of 50 successful venipunctures
  • Must pass the California state-approved exam

Classroom Work

The classroom portion of phlebotomy certification consists of up to 60 hours of lectures and classroom instruction about theory, skin puncture procedures, hands-on training venipuncture, basic anatomy, basic physiology, specimen collection introduction, the circulatory system, risks and complications involved, quality assurance procedures and how to conduct in a medical and patient setting.

Once a student completes the classroom part for becoming a California phlebotomist, they must then pass the national certification exam.

Field Training

Field training also called Clinical Externship is done for a total of at least 40 hours. This hands-on training can be carried out at any California hospital or clinic.

Once you complete the necessary steps for becoming a phlebotomist, you can apply to work at plasma centers, doctor’s offices, hospitals, nursing homes and even the American Red Cross. The need for certified phlebotomist’s is on the rise because the rate of retiring baby boomers in this field is increasing, too.

Working for the health care industry as a California phlebotomist part or full time will give you a sense of pride and accomplishment because you will have very important responsibilities to carry out.

The knowledge and training you will receive from Bay Area Medical Academy or any other accepted school for phlebotomy certification will be invaluable for your career and any advancement you want to work toward in the future.
