ASPT Phlebotomy Certification

The American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) is one of the top certifying agencies in the field of Phlebotomy. While the certification process is one of the most important roles of ASPT, it also provides continuing education, home study and newsletters, and works with training programs and their instructors to improve the quality of education in the field. Phlebotomy plays an increasingly vital role in health care, and the ASPT works to improve the education and professionalism of the field.

How To Become ASPT Certified

If you are ready to obtain your certification in Phlebotomy, the ASPT is a great place to start. The ASPT exam is open to any health care provider who is involved directly with patient care. Even if phlebotomy is only part of your job, it is worthwhile to pursue certification to give you more mobility in your chosen career. Once you apply to take the ASPT certification exam, you will receive a free study guide to help you prepare. The study material covers all the areas you will need to know before the exam, and can help you ensure that you are up to date on the latest information, as well as helping you brush up on the basics of the job. The study material will arrive several weeks before the exam, giving you sufficient time to prepare. The study material and the exam itself are offered in both English and Spanish. Study material and the exam are updated each year by a group of instructors who ensure that participants are tested on the latest information and techniques in the field.

ASPT Certification Process

Even if you have already been certified by another organization, ASPT welcomes you to complete the ASPT exam also. After completing the certification exam, you will receive your results in about six to eight weeks. To be eligible to take the exam, you must have worked at least six months as a full time phlebotomy technician, or one year as a part time phlebotomist. Your supervisor must provide a letter on facility letterhead stating that part of your job is the regular procurement of blood samples, or must sign a portion of the application with that information. You must have successfully completed an accredited phlebotomy program that includes at least one hundred documented successful veinpunctures and five document skin punctures. You will also need to be a member of ASPT and provide documentation of current membership. In certain situations, provisional memberships can be awarded through your school program.

Attaining certification through the ASPT is a great way to show your dedication to your profession as well as your professionalism. You will be able to present your certification to potential employers, making you a more desirable candidate for any health care position.
